The Wide World of Sports* (10/11/16)

*Well, only the ones I care about.

MLB

NL: The Giants beat the Mets 3-0 in the one game wildcard round to advance and face the Cubs. Chicago currently leads that series two games to one.

The Dodgers and Nationals have split the first two games of their series.

AL: The Blue Jays beat Baltimore in their wildcard game 5-2 to face division winner Texas. Texas stays hot and swept the series three games to one.

In the other matchup, Big Papi says goodbye in sad fashion as the Red Sox are swept by Cleveland (whut?) in their series as well, three games to none.

Friday and the Random Ten (Buckle Up Edition)

Hey, did you know baseball season started? Oh, wait they have to talk about Wisconsin and Duke for another few days. So much for choosing Kentucky in my bracket. It's a good thing I don't do that for money. And Bama has a coach now in former NBA player Avery Johnson. His press conference was amazing. When the University of Alabama calls, you pick up the phone. #BuckleUp

Before we get things going, how about that Random Ten last week? You can take a quick review by following this link, or trying to figure out the artists from the cool picture below:

Friday and the Random 10 (Opening Day Edition)

Enough basketball already! I mean other than waiting for Kentucky to win it all like everyone thinks they will, and Alabama trying to find a new coach, I am all hooped out. But hold on, help is on the way! (cue The Little River Band) Baseball opening day is Sunday! Yeah, the Braves are going to suck, but at least they are playing a game outside. Then again, I am probably the only person that actually likes baseball anyway.

But before we fill out those lineup cards and sit down with some dogs and a beer, lets take a quick review of last week by following this link, or trying to figure out the artists from the cool picture below:

Friday and the Random 10 (5 Star Edition)

Well how was that for a Super Bowl? Not bad huh? I wasn't too far off with my prediction of New England by a score of 33-30 (it was actually 28-24). Seriously though Seattle, run the damn ball.

In bigger and better news though, Bama pulled in yet another #1 recruiting class. Ho hum. It would be really nice if we got some to stay for the senior year instead of bolting for the NFL. That's what happens when you sign all those 5 star recruits. #BamaProblems

Let's see how many stars this week's Random 10 would get! But first, as a quick review of last week, you can follow this link, or check out the cool picture below:

It's starting to get down to the nitty gritty part of the season now so I am just going to start focusing on the top ten teams. This is the first year that the top four teams will meet in a playoff (committee rankings announced every Tuesday). Well, this is what the Top 10 looked like before Saturday:

1 Mississippi State (48) 9-0 1488

3 Oregon 9-1 1334
4 Alabama 8-1 1326

*Well, only the ones I care about.

MLB Playoffs

American LeagueThe surprising Royals lead the Orioles two games to none. Monday's game three in Kansas City was rained out.

National League: The Giants and Cardinals have been fighting a battle of one run games. They are tied 1-1 heading to San Francisco for game three.

To tell you the truth I haven't watched very much of any of the games so far. I have had to look up their scores and everything afterward. I don't know if it's the stations or the times that the games are on or what.

NFL

Meh. The Falcons got beat by the Bears 27-13. Like I said, meh. At least I can get a lot of Viggle points by checking into the games and playing some of the predictions for more points.

NCAA Football

Well, this is what the Top 25 looked like before Saturday:

1 Florida State
2 Auburn (23) 5-0 1459
3 Mississippi State (2) 5-0 1320
3 Ole Miss 5-0 1320
5 Baylor 5-0 1258
6 Notre Dame 5-0 1186
7 Alabama 4-1 1060
8 Michigan State 4-1 981
9 TCU 4-0 979
10 Arizona 5-0 951
11 Oklahoma 4-1 904
12 Oregon 4-1 888
13 Georgia 4-1 854
14 Texas A&M 5-1 731
15 Ohio State 4-1 534
16 Oklahoma State 4-1 527
17 Kansas State 4-1 486
18 UCLA 4-1 460
19 East Carolina 4-1 344
20 Arizona State 4-1 325
21 Nebraska 5-1 283
22 Georgia Tech 5-0 235
23 Missouri 4-1 212
24 Utah 4-1 206
25 Stanford 3-2 143

Anyway, the new Top 25 now looks like this:

1 Mississippi State (45) 6-0 1480
2 Florida State (12) 6-0 1415
3 Ole Miss (3) 6-0 1413
4 Baylor 6-0 1317
5 Notre Dame 6-0 1228
6 Auburn 5-1 1144
7 Alabama 5-1 1068
8 Michigan State 5-1 1015
9 Oregon 5-1 1014
10 Georgia 5-1 981
11 Oklahoma 5-1 935
12 TCU 4-1 917
13 Ohio State 4-1 648
14 Kansas State 4-1 626
15 Oklahoma State 5-1 620
16 Arizona 5-1 590
17 Arizona State 4-1 459
18 East Carolina 5-1 449
19 Nebraska 5-1 402
20 Utah 4-1 305
21 Texas A&M 5-2 264
22 USC 4-2 258
23 Stanford 4-2 223
24 Clemson 4-2 188
25 Marshall 6-0 148

#2 Florida State and #5 Notre Dame play this weekend.

I told you Auburn was an illusion. Bama "wins" against Arkansas 14-13. We look like crap and stayed 7th. Bama still plays two teams ahead of them in the polls though, Mississippi St and Auburn. Roll Tide anyway. Just keep on winning.

*Upset predictions for no logical reasoning

Arkansas beats #10 Georgia

Tennessee beats #3 Ole Miss

I don't know why.

The Wide World of Sports* (10/07/14)

*Well, only the ones I care about.

MLB

I love me some baseball and October means one thing: playoffs! Go Braves! Oh they had a horrible year? Never mind. They did fire their GM though and their hitting coach resigned (thank God!).

American League: The Royals won their one game wildcard playoff against the A's to advance to take on the California Angels (you can change their name all you want, I will always call them this). This was not exactly Mike Trout's coming out party as the Royals swept the Angels in three games.

In the other match-up we have the Baltimore Orioles against the Detroit Tigers. Bullpen explosions hampered Detroit and they just never seemed to get things in gear with their great starting pitching. They went and got swept too y'all.

So now it's down to Baltimore vs. Kansas City with the winner going to the World Series.

National League: The Giants won their wildcard game against the Pirates. They now play the Nationals and as I write this they are up two games to one.

The big series is actually the Dodgers and the Cardinals. Both aces, Kershaw and Wainwright, were shelled. The Cards surprising lead this series 2-1 also.

NFL

Meh. I am a Falcons fan so that's all I really care about (and I don't even care that much). I do keep an eye on the teams from Florida though, but that has not been very pretty.

The Falcons can't win on the road and are currently 2-3, but in second place in the division. Jacksonville, Miami, and Tampa are a combined 3-11. Ouch. They need more Bama players.

NCAA Football

Well, this is what the Top 25 looked like before Saturday:

1 Florida State (27) 4-0 1416
2 Oregon (13) 4-0 1405
3 Alabama (13) 4-0 1387
4 Oklahoma (7) 4-0 1357
5 Auburn 4-0 1272
6 Texas A&M 5-0 1206
7 Baylor 4-0 1149
8 UCLA 4-0 975
9 Notre Dame 4-0 972
10 Michigan State 3-1 944
11 Ole Miss 4-0 906
12 Mississippi State 4-0 848
13 Georgia 3-1 788
14 Stanford 3-1 643
15 LSU 4-1 636
16 USC 3-1 560
17 Wisconsin 3-1 502
18 BYU 4-0 450
19 Nebraska 5-0 445
20 Ohio State 3-1 298
21 Oklahoma State 3-1 246
22 East Carolina 3-1 237
23 Kansas State 3-1 216
24 Missouri 4-1 145
25 TCU 3-0 109

Then a lot of upsets happened, including one I am not even going to talk about (Ole Miss? Are you freaking kidding me?). Anyway, the new Top 25 now looks like this:

1 Florida State
2 Auburn (23) 5-0 1459
3 Mississippi State (2) 5-0 1320
3 Ole Miss 5-0 1320
5 Baylor 5-0 1258
6 Notre Dame 5-0 1186
7 Alabama 4-1 1060
8 Michigan State 4-1 981
9 TCU 4-0 979
10 Arizona 5-0 951
11 Oklahoma 4-1 904
12 Oregon 4-1 888
13 Georgia 4-1 854
14 Texas A&M 5-1 731
15 Ohio State 4-1 534
16 Oklahoma State 4-1 527
17 Kansas State 4-1 486
18 UCLA 4-1 460
19 East Carolina 4-1 344
20 Arizona State 4-1 325
21 Nebraska 5-1 283
22 Georgia Tech 5-0 235
23 Missouri 4-1 212
24 Utah 4-1 206
25 Stanford 3-2 143

There's still a lot of season left to make it into those four top spots for the NCAA's first ever playoff at the end of the year. To paraphrase Dory, "just keep winning, just keep winning..."

Auburn is an illusion y'all. Don't buy it.

Roll Tide anyway.

Weekend Update (06/02/13)

I have been working quite a lot and add in the fact that I've been sick has changed my ability to keep up with the shows I like (and to blog about them). As I looked for newer episodes I basically found there weren't any. Everything is on hiatus or between seasons. I did watch a few movies though.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Dee had her baby, and it belonged to the tranny. Of course it did.

Game of Thrones - The imp married the 14 year old girl. There were some boobs and butts. And the fat boy apparently found a magic knife.

Movies - Hansel and Gretel - I thought this movie was pretty cool. I just didn't know witches had wicked ninja skills. And that's how trolls can be bitchin'.

Jack the Giant Slayer - You know, since I was apparently watching all movies involving fairy tales. Maybe it was the fever, but I liked this movie too. The giants were awesome and the climax of where the magic crown ended up was neat.

Extinction - This was a free rental from X-Box. It was still overpriced. This movie sucked, rambled on in several nonsensical ways, and ended with no conclusion. It was another one of those virus/walking dead type of movies, but had no plot, no direction, and no point. It made my fever feel worse...

Sports

Braves - Not to bore you with two weeks worth of stats, but since the last update the Braves have gone 9-4 to improve their record to 34-22 overall. They are in first place with the biggest lead of the year at 6.5 games over the Washington Nationals.

Bama Baseball - Played well enough in the SEC tournament to get a #2 seed in the Tallahassee Regional. Unfortunately lost their first game to #3 seed Troy 5-2 to put them in the losers bracket. In the elimination game they beat Savannah State, only to advance and lose to Troy again by blowing a 3 run lead in the ninth. Ouch. Season over.

P.S. And do not forget to recommend this blog continues.

Weekend Update

Audio/Video/Telly

Doctor Who - Journey to the Center of the Tardis. Basically a Clara episode where we don't learn much about her, but she does come across some interesting things while she is being chased through the interior of the Tardis. The pool, the library, that telescope thingy that killed the werewolf in that one episode. She also finds a book called "The History of the Time War" and learns the Doctor's name, only to have it erased later. Grrr.

Community - Troy and Abed do the whole swapping bodies bit like in Freaky Friday. It has its moments.

How I Met Your Mother - Damn I wish Lilly would take the job in Italy and be gone forever.

Movies - Of all the Pixar movies, The Incredibles is my favorite. Reminds me of happier times when things were all about family. My oldest daughter is so Violet, and my youngest is very much Dash (for a girl). Unfortunately there is no Elastigirl in my life anymore. As awesome as this movie is, it hurts to watch it sometimes.

Books - Finally got Homeland, and promptly finished it in one day. Yeah, I read like that. It was a continuation of the book Little Brother. Within the first 50 pages there were references to The Pirate Bay, torrents, X-box and Doctor Who. And yeah, Will Wheaton makes a character appearance. Unfortunately, the book left me with a feeling of non-closure. I wanted the evil bitch to pay, but she got off the hook again. Double Grrr.

Sports

Braves - Went to Colorado and took two out of three (after having a game cancelled because of snow), and then got swept in Detroit. They have played just two home games in the last three weeks. Scheduling sucks. Finished the week with a record of 15-9, which is still good for first place.

NFL Draft - The draft finally happened and all I was concerned about was where my Bama boys were going and who the Falcons would pick. Well the Falcons didn't "wow" me, but Alabama made some noise in the first round with three straight picks (9-11) with CB Dee Milliner going to the Jets, OL Chance Warmack going to Tennessee and then OL DJ Fluker picked up by San Diego. The rest of the draft went like:
  • RB Eddie Lacy, Green Bay Packers
  • LB Nico Johnson to Kansas City Chiefs
  • OL Barrett Jones to St Louis Rams
  • DL Jessie Williams to Seattle Seahawks
  • DL Quinton Dial to San Francisco 49ers
  • TE Michael Williams to Detroit Lions
  • DB Robert Lester to Carolina Panthers
  • DL Damion Square to Philadelphia Eagles
  • OL Carson Tinker to Jacksonville Jaguars
Considering just a few years ago, Bama had not one single player drafted at all, Nick Saban is worth every damn penny he is paid (maybe more).
P.S. And do not forget to recommend this blog continues.
