The Wide World of Sports* (12/10/14)

*Well, only the ones I care about.

NCAA Football

The only thing that matters now is the playoff rankings. This is what they looked like before the conference championships:

1) Alabama
2) Oregon
3) TCU
4) Florida State

*******************************************

5) Ohio State
6) Baylor
7) Arizona
8) Michigan State

#1 Alabama 42, #16 Missouri 13. Bama wins the SEC.

#2 Oregon 51 , #7 Arizona 13. The Ducks win the PAC 12

#3 TCU 55, Iowa State 3. No conference championship for the Big 12.

#4 Florida State 37, #11 Georgia Tech 35. Noles win the ACC (like that's hard).

#5 Ohio State 59, #13 Wisconsin 0. Buckeyes win the Big 10

#6 Baylor 38, #9 Kansas State 27. See TCU above. No conference championship game.

The Playoff Committee Rankings came out Sunday afternoon, and I was kinda shocked at one team. This is what the final rankings look like:

1) Alabama
2) Oregon
3) Florida State
4) Ohio State

*******************************************

5) Baylor
6) TCU
7) Mississippi State
8) Michigan State

So Bama plays Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl, and Oregon gets FSU in the Rose bowl. But how in the world did TCU drop from third to sixth? Granted they lost to Baylor in the regular season, but that's a far better quality loss than other teams like Ohio State. It just flat out looks like not having a conference championship (and that extra quality game) is not a good thing in the eyes of the committee. Who wants to bet that the Big 12 looks for teams to add so they can create a Big 12 championship game in the near future?

By the way, did I mention Bama dropped 55 on Auburn in the Iron Bowl? Just checking.

NFL

The Falcons? Ugh. Bama boy Julio went off with 11 catches for 259 yards, but it all wasn't enough to beat the Packers. They lost 43-37. Hey, guess who is still in first place with a 5-8 record though?

MLB

Braves: No blockbuster trades (yet), but a few deals:

Signed OF Nick Markakis to a 4 year deal. Nothing wrong with adding good OBP guys. In fact, it's what they should focus on.

Signed P Michael Kohn. Meh.

Signed P Jim Johnson. Former all star closer, but had a bad 2014. Good low risk, high reward addition to the bullpen.

Non-tender Brandon Beachy and Kris Medlen. It hurts, yeah, but how much can you really wait around for hurt pitchers after their second TJ surgery?
