The Wide World of Sports* (11/18/14)

*Well, only the ones I care about.

NCAA Football

It's starting to get down to the nitty gritty part of the season now so I am just going to start focusing on the top ten teams. This is the first year that the top four teams will meet in a playoff (committee rankings announced every Tuesday). Well, this is what the Top 10 looked like before Saturday:

1 Mississippi State (48) 9-0 1488
2 Florida State (12) 9-0 1446
3 Oregon 9-1 1334
4 Alabama 8-1 1326
5 TCU 8-1 1273
6 Baylor 8-1 1193
7 Arizona State 8-1 1142
8 Ohio State 8-1 1086
9 Auburn 7-2 981
10 Ole Miss 8-2 948

#4 Alabama 25, #1 Mississippi State 20. This game wasn't a close as the score shows. Bama led 19-0 and just fiddled around offensively after that. MSU couldn't do a thing against the Bama D.

Oregon State 35, #7 Arizona State 27. Oops.

#15 Georgia 34, #9 Auburn 7. Damn. I was starting to worry about UGA in the SECCG, but Gurley blew out his ACL right after coming back from suspension. His season (and college career) is done.

Northwestern 43, #18 Notre Dame 40. Because it's fun to make fun of them when they lose.

South Carolina 23, Florida 20. Yeah it was in OT, but it was at The Swamp. Muschamp got fired ya'll.

The Playoff Committee Rankings do not reflect the polls and changed a bit with the Mississippi State loss. The top four make the playoffs. It looks like this:

1) Alabama 9-1
2) Oregon 9-1
3) Florida State 10-0
4) Mississippi State 9-1

5) TCU 9-1
6) Ohio State 9-1
7) Baylor 8-1
8) Ole Miss 8-2

Well lookie who moved up to #1. I stopped at eight teams because I am pretty sure this playoff system will be expanded at some point in the future and I was just curious what it would look like.

NFL

The Falcons won another game to put their record at 4-6. This puts them in first place in the NFC South. First? Wait, that can't be right.

MLB

Braves: Oh my Lord!

Traded 2B Tommy La Stella to the Chicago Cubs for pitcher Arodys Vizcaino. I liked Tommy. He was my kind of ballplayer, you know one that can actually get on base. And Vizcaino is actually someone the Braves traded away years ago. Now they got him back.

And the big one.

Traded Jason Heyward to the St. Louis Cardinals (along with Jordan Walden) for pitchers Shelby Miller and Tyrell Jenkins. I don't know what the Hell they were thinking with this one. I know I'm a Braves homer, but certainly they could have gotten more for Heyward. And having to add in Walden too? Awful, awful trade that will hurt for years to come.
