The Wide World of Sports* (10/28/14)

*Well, only the ones I care about.

MLB

World Series: Game 6 is currently on and the Royals lead 7-0 in the third inning. Looks like there will be a game 7 tomorrow night

NFL

The Falcons played the Lions in England for some reason. The game was on at 9 am when I got up. Weird. Oh yeah, and we lost on a last second field goal. The Falcons suck on both shores of the Atlantic Ocean. High draft picks!

NCAA Football

It's starting to get down to the nitty gritty part of the season now so I am just going to start focusing on the top ten teams. This is the first year that the top four teams will meet in a playoff (committee rankings announced for the first time tonight). Well, this is what the Top 10 looked like before Saturday:

1 Mississippi State (43) 6-0 1480
2 Florida State (14) 7-0 1433
3 Ole Miss (3) 7-0 1404
4 Alabama 6-1 1235
5 Auburn 5-1 1231
6 Oregon 6-1 1142
7 Notre Dame 6-1 1133
8 Michigan State 6-1 1066
9 Georgia 6-1 1055
10 TCU 5-1 962

#3 Ole Miss 7, #24 LSU 10. I pointed that game out last week. Should have predicted the upset.

Bama beat Tennessee in a homecoming of sorts for offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin. One play, eighty yards, touchdown. After Copper had a bazillion yards by halftime, I started unwrapping my cigar. Final score: Bama 34, UT 20. And it was never that close. The Tide has a week off before heading to face LSU. At Death Valley. Yeah.

The playoff committee unveiled their very first rankings. The top four make the playoffs. It looks like this:

1) Mississippi St 7-0
2) Florida State 7-0
3) Auburn 6-1
4) Ole Miss 7-1

*******************************************

5) Oregon 7-1
6) Alabama 7-1
7) TCU 6-1
8) Michigan State 7-1

I stopped at eight teams because I am pretty sure this playoff system will be expanded at some point and was just curious what it would look like. If this was the end of the season could you imagine an Iron Bowl rematch the following week? Damn.

Seriously, Bama isn't in at this point? They would beat every team on that list, including Ole Miss in a re-match. No worries, many weeks left yet to play. Just keep winning.

The games of note this week with my predictions:

#2 FSU @ Louisville - FSU wins a close one, won't be surprised if they get upset

Stanford @ #6 Oregon - Always tough for the "O" but they win this one

#7 Notre Dame @ Navy (bwahaha just kidding)  Play somebody! Even the committee gave them no love.

#10 TCU @ #22 West Virginia - This should be a shootout. Can TCU play defense? TCU 124, WV 98

The Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party - I keep wanting to think that UF is decent. They aren't. Dawgs big in this one.

Arkansas @ #1 Mississippi St. - I'm saying the Hogs finally break through in the SEC and in a big way, 35-32 over the Bulldogs.

#5 Auburn @ #3 Ole Miss - I actually need the war chicken to win this game and I think they will. I feel so dirty.
