This Day in Music History: Led Zeppelin/Physical Graffiti (02/24)

Physical Graffiti is the sixth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, released as a double album on this day in 1975. 

The band wrote and recorded eight new songs for the album but they stretched the total time of the record beyond the typical length of a single LP, so the band decided to make Physical Graffiti a double album by including unreleased tracks from earlier recording sessions: one outtake from Led Zeppelin III, three from Led Zeppelin IV, and three from Houses of the Holy, including the unused title track. 

Physical Graffiti was commercially and critically successful; the album went 16x platinum in the US in 2006, signifying shipments of eight million copies, and was a #1 album in both the US and UK.

This Day in Music History (10/22): Led Zeppelin/Led Zeppelin II

Led Zeppelin II is the second studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, released on this day in 1969. With elements of blues and folk music, the album also exhibits the band's evolving musical style of blues-derived material and their guitar and riff-based sound. It has been described as the band's heaviest album.

Upon release, Led Zeppelin II sold well and was the band's first album to reach #1 in the UK and the US. It has been certified 12x Platinum by the RIAA for sales in excess of 12 million copies. Since its release, writers and music critics have regularly cited it in polls of the greatest and most influential rock albums.

Even though all songs from the album get airplay on classic rock stations, only two of them actually charted, with "Whole Lotta Love" peaking at #4 on the US charts, and "Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman)" reaching only #65.

This Day in Music History: Led Zeppelin/Led Zeppelin IV (11/08)

The untitled fourth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, commonly referred to as Led Zeppelin IV, was released on this day in 1971 on Atlantic Records. After the group's 1970 album Led Zeppelin III received lukewarm reviews from critics, Page decided their fourth album would officially be untitled. This, along with the inner sleeve's design featuring four symbols that represented each band member, led to the album being referred to variously as the Four Symbols logo, Four Symbols, The Fourth Album, Untitled, Runes, The Hermit, and ZoSo. In addition to lacking a title, the original cover featured no band name, as the group wished to be anonymous and to avoid easy pigeonholing by the press.

Led Zeppelin IV was a commercial and critical success, producing many of the band's most well-known songs, including "Black Dog" (#15), "Rock and Roll" (#47), "Misty Mountain Hop", "Going to California", and the band's signature song, "Stairway to Heaven". The album is one of the best-selling albums worldwide at 37 million units, and with a 23-times platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America, it is the fourth best selling album in the United States. Writers and critics have regularly cited it on lists of rock's greatest albums.

You know, on my blog here I started doing a lot of what I called "fillers" (This Day in Music/Disney History) just to fill in the gaps between posts. People seem to like them so that's okay, but they seem to be overtaking my blog a bit. I mean it seems that's all I post. I know work doesn't leave me much time to write "original" posts, but I do notice the trend and hope to add more varied content in the future.

That being said, one of the mainstays around here is obviously the Random Ten. Without further delay, let's get right into that!

Last week things ended up with a distinct soundtrack flavor. It was a regular Top 10 list , but the Tarkus was never summoned, meaning the residents of Exile Island (Yes and Apollo 440) were set free. Anyone is fair game this week. Let's see how it turns out!

And here we go again. It's the Friday before Memorial Day so what does Disney go and do to us again? Yep, it's that deal where we stay open for a whole 24 hours. I have a 13 hour shift, but at least I am not part of the overnight crew. So to honor all us hard working cast members I am going to copy what I did in this countdown from the previous over-nighter and do a Top 24 list, instead of top 10. Yeah it's one of those special event type things. Next week will return to normal (or for what passes for normal around here).

Well how was that for a Super Bowl? Not bad huh? I wasn't too far off with my prediction of New England by a score of 33-30 (it was actually 28-24). Seriously though Seattle, run the damn ball.

In bigger and better news though, Bama pulled in yet another #1 recruiting class. Ho hum. It would be really nice if we got some to stay for the senior year instead of bolting for the NFL. That's what happens when you sign all those 5 star recruits. #BamaProblems

Friday and the Random 10 (Super Bowl Edition)

Well it's the Friday before Super Bowl! I am totally over the whole "deflate-gate" thing. At least, for a day, that talk was replaced with the whole Marshawn Lynch thing. He doesn't want to talk to the media, but he is obligated to, I get it. Don't ask him dumb questions and make him stare at you for three minutes. Oh, too late... (but awesome)

As for the game, I have no idea who to pick. I do not have a dog in this fight, so let's see if the Random 10 somehow chooses a winner for us.

Friday and the Random 10 (Deflated Balls Edition)

The Super Bowl is set, but all the talk is about Deflate-Gate. Seems that when inspected after the game in which New England beat the Colts, 11 out of the 12 footballs were "improperly" inflated, or under inflated. At this point there has been no ruling or penalties or whatever. I just know it's the NFL so they won't shut up about it for probably another ten years.

You know what is properly inflated though? That's right: The Random 10. Filled  with all the randomness that probability will allow, but still as constant as the northern star.

Friday and the Random 10 (Life Hangover Edition)

You know what? Blah. That's how many of us at work feel.We finally made it through the holidays and we are all basically not cast members at Disney, but cast members of the Walking Dead. So many of us are sick from working extended hours, and the rest of us are just plain worn out. Add into that the actual holidays themselves, plus what transpired in the Sugar Bowl last night (and 2014 in general) and I just have a hangover from life, no alcohol needed.

Nothing to do but plow ahead for the very first Random 10 for 2015. Last week was an all 2014 edition, so this one starts off completely fresh.
