This Day in Music History: Pink Floyd/The Dark Side of the Moon (03/01)

The Dark Side of the Moon is the eighth studio album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, released on this day in 1973. It built on ideas explored in the band's earlier recordings and live shows, but lacks the extended instrumental excursions that characterised their work following the departure in 1968 of founder member, principal composer, and lyricist, Syd Barrett.

The themes on The Dark Side of the Moon include conflict, greed, the passage of time, and mental illness, the latter partly inspired by Barrett's deteriorating mental state.

The group used some of the most advanced recording techniques of the time, including multitrack recording and tape loops. Analogue synthesizers were given prominence in several tracks, and a series of recorded interviews with the band's road crew and others provided the philosophical quotations used throughout. Engineer Alan Parsons was responsible for some of the album's most notable sonic aspects and the recruitment of non-lexical singer Clare Torry. The album's iconic sleeve, designed by Storm Thorgerson, depicts a prism dispersing light into color and represents the band's stage lighting, the record's lyrical themes, and keyboardist Richard Wright's request for a "simple and bold" design.

The Dark Side of the Moon was an immediate success; it topped the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart for one week and remained in the charts for 741(!) weeks from 1973 to 1988. With an estimated 50 million copies sold, it is Pink Floyd's most commercially successful album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide. It produced two singles, "Money" and "Time". The Dark Side of the Moon is Pink Floyd's most popular album among fans and critics, and has been ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time.

Friday and the Random 10 (Jamaican Me Crazy with These Long Songs Edition)

So things are finally settling down some. The park hours are cutting back, it's cooling down a bit, and the Electric Light Parade is coming up to its final performance (Oct 9th)! After that, they have no idea what we will be doing at night. No really, there is nothing scheduled as of yet to replace it. Get ready for more Move It, Shake It dance parties!!! Meh.

Friday and the Random 10 (Pokemon Go Edition)

So yeah, I think it is about time I mentioned the craze that is currently sweeping the nation: Pokemon Go. And, no I don't play it because, in the words of my friend Scott, "I'm a grown ass man". However, I knew it was going to be huge. How? Well I play another little app called Ingress, which is also developed by Niantic, just like Pokemon GO.

As a matter of fact, all the Pokemon locations (whatever they're called) are actually the locations of portals in Ingress. Like copied straight over. Ingress portals are near objects of art, parks, and historical areas (that's why you can catch Picazulu at places like the Holocaust Museum...it wasn't meant to be disrespectful, it's that it was considered an important location in the other game).

So right now I am working on combining this countdown with a list of the Top 10 Pokemon(s?...Pokemen?...Pokemai?) as told to me by my daughters Wendy and Lorelei. It will probably suck, but here goes:

Friday and the Random 10 (Stuck Whistle Edition)

You know, some days on the Walt Disney Railroad just never seem to amaze me. This year has seen some crazy things happen that has shut down our operation: a turtle laying her eggs in the gravel by Fantasyland Station, mystery lumberjacks cutting down trees on the backstretch, and well, a balloon. Yeah, a balloon. This week we got to add another thing to the list. The whistle on one of out trains got stuck open, and it was like loud. L-O-U-D. Like OMG I can't even hear myself think loud. Needless to say, it got replaced. I tell ya, it's always something...

Now on to our regularly scheduled randomness!

So today marks the end of July and how do we celebrate the end of a month that ends on a Friday around here? That's right, one song for every day of the month! So today instead of a Random 10 you get a Random 31! This ought to make the picture below hella interesting:

Well, got 25 of them...
