This Day in Music History (10/02): The Police/Reggatta de Blanc/Ghost in the Machine

Reggatta de Blanc is the 2nd studio album by English rock band The Police, released on this day in 1979. It was their first album to reach #1 on the UK Album Charts (#25 in the US). It was their second album to bear a foreign language title after the band's 1978 debut album Outlandos d'Amour. Reggatta de Blanc proved both more popular and successful than its predecessor though. In 2012, the album was ranked #372 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

It features the band's first two UK #1 hits: "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon". The title track earned the band their first Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1980.

Also released by The Police on this day, but in 1981, is their 4th studio album Ghost in the Machine. The album reached #1 on the UK Albums Chart. In the US it reached #2 on the Billboard 200, and went multi-platinum. It was listed #322 on Rolling Stone 's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

"Invisible Sun," released as the first single (in the UK only) was a large success, making it to #2, even though the video was banned by the BBC for including footage of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Later, "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" made it to #3 in the US and #1 in Britain, and my favorite "Spirits in the Material World" made it to #11 in the US and #12 in the UK.

This Day in Music History: The Police/Synchronicity (06/01)

Synchronicity is the fifth and final studio album by English rock band The Police, released on this date in 1983.

The album was number one on both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200, and sold over 8 million copies in the US. The album includes the chart topping hit singles "Every Breath You Take" (#1), "King of Pain" (#3), "Wrapped Around Your Finger" (#8) and "Synchronicity II" (#16).

So things are finally settling down some. The park hours are cutting back, it's cooling down a bit, and the Electric Light Parade is coming up to its final performance (Oct 9th)! After that, they have no idea what we will be doing at night. No really, there is nothing scheduled as of yet to replace it. Get ready for more Move It, Shake It dance parties!!! Meh.

So yeah, I think it is about time I mentioned the craze that is currently sweeping the nation: Pokemon Go. And, no I don't play it because, in the words of my friend Scott, "I'm a grown ass man". However, I knew it was going to be huge. How? Well I play another little app called Ingress, which is also developed by Niantic, just like Pokemon GO. 

As a matter of fact, all the Pokemon locations (whatever they're called) are actually the locations of portals in Ingress. Like copied straight over. Ingress portals are near objects of art, parks, and historical areas (that's why you can catch Picazulu at places like the Holocaust Museum...it wasn't meant to be disrespectful, it's that it was considered an important location in the other game).

So right now I am working on combining this countdown with a list of the Top 10 Pokemon(s?...Pokemen?...Pokemai?) as told to me by my daughters Wendy and Lorelei. It will probably suck, but here goes:

You know, I just don't get it. I know I am a big Bama homer, but one guy drafted in the first round? And not even a defensive player? Am I the only one that actually watched football this past season? I saw team after team "reaching" for player after player, including the Ole Mess players with drug/assault problems. Hey guys, there's a reason your team was 3-13 last year and you have a new head coach every other season. #Idiots #ICanDraftBetterThanThat

I suppose there's always Round 2 today. Ugh...

This Day in Music History: The Police/Outlandos d'Amour (11/02)

Outlandos d'Amour is the debut studio album by English rock band The Police. It was released on this day in 1978.  Although when released it received mixed reviews, it has since been regarded as one of the finest debut albums of all time. The album was ranked #38 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "100 Best Debut Albums of All Time". The album reached #6 on the UK Album Charts, but only #138 on the US Billboard 200.

This Day in Music History: The Police/Zenyatta Mondatta (10/03)

Zenyatta Mondatta is the third studio album by English rock band The Police, released on this day in 1980. It reached #1 on the UK Albums Chart. In the U.S., the album spent almost three years on the charts and peaked at #5.

It features the two hit singles: "Don't Stand So Close to Me" (#1 UK, #10 US) and "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" (#5 UK, #10 US).

The album won The Police two Grammy Awards including Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and The Police's second consecutive win for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "Behind My Camel".

Friday and the Random 10 (Halloween Edition)

Okay so I have been trying to decide what I wanted to do special for the Halloween version of the Random 10. My first thought was to expand it to thirteen for all the triskaidecaphobics out there. Then I realized that I reserve that for the Friday the 13th's that roll around occasionally. 

My only other option (since it is the last day of October) was to just go ahead and hit everyone with 31 songs. Consider it a giant grab bag of candy. I am sure everyone will find something that they like.

Friday and the Random 10 (Stumping Viggle Edition)

You know what I love about Friday's now? I get to sleep in! I mean I thoroughly enjoyed my week at Town Square Theater being a bouncer for the Big Cheese, but it's nice to NOT have to go there, or anywhere towards Disney actually. And on top of all that, it's a three day weekend for me. Woop Woop! (do people still say that?)

And now down to business. Looking back at last week I see that Exile Island has new company in Styx, while Chicago just can't seem to escape.

However, now that it's October, RW has immunity and gets sent back to the active list. Wonder how long that will last? I give it two weeks.

1) Chicago/It Better End Soon

1) Cherry Poppin' Daddies/Shake Your Love Maker - They should use this song at the MiSiCi instead! So much better than a tail feather. I would spend so much time on M-04...

2) Anderson Wakeman/Morning Star - These two guys did an album together where it's just RW on piano with JA singing. I was hoping for a lot better than the way it turned out. Viggle has no clue.

3) Steve Howe/Beginnings (Themes) - From one of his 10 or 20 Homebrew albums of demos. Meh. BTW, in the last two songs we have had 3/4 of ABWH! Viggle has now clue to this one either.

4) Yes/The Clap (Studio Version) - Technically just SH and should get him banned, but it is listed as Yes so I am going to let it go. This was a bonus track from The Yes Album which was so different from the live album version. I am working on a post of my favorite instrumentals and this is on the list.

5) The Beatles/I Will - Sing it Paul.

6) Nektar/On the Run (The Trucker) - Once again, Viggle strikes out. Hell I had no clue what song this was either.

7) The Beatles/Don't Pass Me By - Meh, and it gets them sent to Exile Island.

8) Kansas/Lonely Wind - This is a little gem of a song from their very first album. Doubt anyone has heard it. Album cover winner:

9) The Police/Synchronicity II - Great song from a great album.

10) Pink Floyd/One of My Turns - From The Wall. You may have heard of it. I try but I just can't get into them.

Well there we have it. Chicago just can't seem to get the hint, though the song title was appropriately funny. Styx is free to return to the rest of the tribes, however The Beatles take their place.

Viggle had a hard time keeping up with me this week. On a side note, I have earned enough points to redeem for a MLB t-shirt! That's done and I will model it for everyone when it gets in. I know you ladies will be looking forward to that. Whatever.

The STCS for this week is Chicago/Where Were You Nektar/That's Life. If I remember right this counts in the banning process so off goes Nektar as well.

So it's been a week now and basically everyone has gotten over the 24 hours of madness thing at work. We all survived somehow, even if there was a bit of confusion at times. It was basically successful so that just means we will end up doing it again at some point in the future. Yay?

Skip forward a week and school is winding down all over. My oldest graduated this morning actually (who the Hell has a graduation ceremony at 9 am? On a Friday? So Wrong!) Anyway, I digress. After all that craziness had subsided I actually have time to sit and churn out a random 10. Usual rules and whatnot up there ↑ at the top.

You may have noticed recently that I have been re-posting a lot of my older posts dealing with relationships. Well the reason behind that is that my collaborator, co-conspirator, and just plain evil muse Kerra (from The Levels of Awkwardness) is moving back to Florida today. We plan to do some creative and mind bending "blogwork" in the upcoming weeks. Be on the lookout for that.
