This Day in Music History: AC/DC/Highway to Hell (07/27)

Highway to Hell is the fifth international studio album by Australian hard rock band AC/DC, released on this day in 1979. The title reflects the incredibly arduous nature of touring constantly and life on the road. It became AC/DC's first LP to break the US Top 100, eventually reaching #17, and it propelled the band into the top ranks of hard rock acts. Selling over 7 million copies, it is generally considered one of the greatest hard rock albums ever made.

However, it was also the last album featuring lead singer Bon Scott, who died early the following year from over-consumption of alcohol.

This Day in Music History: AC/DC/Back in Black (07/25)

By 1979, AC/DC were poised to receive a significant level of success with their sixth studio album, Highway to Hell. Robert John "Mutt" Lange produced the record, making the band's sound more catchy and accessible to international audiences, and it became their first platinum album in the United States. As the new decade approached, the group set off for the UK and France for the final tour dates of their breakthrough release. They planned to begin recording a follow-up shortly after its completion. On February 19th 1980, Scott went on a drinking binge in a London pub that caused him to lose consciousness, so a friend left him rest in the back of his car overnight. The next morning, Scott was found unresponsive and rushed to King's College Hospital where medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival. The coroner ruled that pulmonary aspiration of vomit was the cause of Scott's death, but the official cause was listed on the death certificate as "acute alcoholic poisoning" and classified as "death by misadventure". The loss devastated the band, who considered breaking up. However, friends and family persuaded them to carry on.

Friday and the Random 10 (Comeback Edition)

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends! Or well, apparently it did end about a year  ago (last one was 6/9/17). It got to be way too time consuming so welcome to a new and improved, simplified and stripped down Random 10!

Friday and the Random 10 (Apartment Finale Edition)

Yeah, I know it has been awhile but I have been dealing with the culmination of the whole bad apartment management scenario. Basically, I wouldn't put up with their condescending (and anti-white person) attitude and just moved out. Me and a good friend were wanting to be in a house again, found one we liked, and moved in over the last two weeks. Sawyer Estates can suck it!

So now I am trying to get back into the normal routine around here, and that starts with music!

Friday and the Random 10 (John Snow is Alive Edition)

Oh you knew he was alive. You, just like everyone else, kept staring at that table and expected him to open his eyes or jump up. The question is, was he alive already, or did the red witch actually bring him back? I never read the books so I don't know any future spoilers. #JohnSnowLives #GameOfThrones

Music is coming...

Friday and the Random 10 (Triskaidekaphobia Edition)

Florida is still not cooperating y'all. They filmed a lot of the Christmas Day events at the Magic Kingdom this week (in case of bad weather) and most of the time it was a chilly 90+ degrees. It just ain't right. I'm gonna move to Michigan, or Hoth, I hear they're about the same in winter...

Anyway, at least there is one thing to perk me up a bit. Today is one of my favorite days: Friday the 13th! I have detailed before my love for thirteen. Wore it all through high school and college. So, when the Random 10 falls on this particular day I get to share more songs.

Friday and the Random 10 (Halloweenie Edition)

Well, looks like this will be the last Random 10 for October. Halloween is tomorrow night (dangit) so I was one day off from doing a spooktacular countdown. At least when I get back to work it will be the end of the MNSS parties. But hey, Christmas is right around the corner now and those parties start up November 8th! Geez.

This Day in Music History: AC/DC/The Razor's Edge (09/24)

The Razors Edge is an album by Australian hard rock band AC/DC released on this day in 1990. It was the band's eleventh internationally released studio album and the twelfth to be released in Australia. It was a major comeback for the band and went multi-platinum (5 million copies sold). The album reached #2 on the US Billboard 200 and #4 in the UK, a smash commercial success that returned the band to the popularity of its glory years of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The album features the hits "Thunderstruck" and "Are You Ready", which reached #5 and #16 respectively on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart, and "Moneytalks", which peaked at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Razors Edge peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 charts and stayed on the chart for 77 consecutive weeks. Currently, the album has sold approximately ten to twelve million copies worldwide, making it the fourth highest selling AC/DC album.

But seriously, Thunderstruck.

This Day in Music History: AC/DC/Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (09/20)

On this day in 1976, AC/DC released their second international album (third in Australia) called Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.

The title track would become one of the band's most famous songs, with the narrator inviting people experiencing problems to either call him on 36-24-36, an actual phone number in Australia at the time, or visit him at his home, at which point he will perform assorted unsavoury acts to resolve said problems. Situations in which he offers assistance include those involving lewd high school headmasters and significant others who are either adulterous or who persistently find fault with their partners. The term "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" is an homage to the cartoon Beany and Cecil, which Angus watched when he was a child. One of the cartoon's characters was named Dishonest John, and carried a business card that read, "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Holidays, Sundays and Special Rates."

Another fan-favorite from the album is "Ride On." Atypically for an AC/DC song, it has a sad, slow blues feel and features Scott's reflective lyrics and restrained, soulful delivery. The lyrics concern a man ruminating on the mistakes he has made in a relationship while drinking. It has frequently been cited as one of AC/DC's best songs.

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap has been certified 6x platinum both in Australia and in the US, selling at least six million copies, becoming the third-highest selling album by AC/DC in the US after Highway to Hell (7x platinum) and Back in Black (22x platinum).

Friday and the Random Ten (College Football Returns Edition)

Well it's about time! College football returns this weekend (actually started last night) and I know millions of people are happy about it. NFL? Whatever. Take you deflated balls and go home. My beloved #3 Alabama Crimson Tide opens up tomorrow night with #20 Wisconsin. Gonna be a slobberknocker! How bout some music to get us fired up? If you're not fired up already something is wrong with you...
