Friday and the Random 10 (July 5th work hangover edition)

Well here we are again, trying to recover from celebrating America. Some of us had parties and barbecues, the rest of us are hung over from working so much since so many people just HAVE to go to the Magic Kingdom on the 4th. Blah.

As usual the rules are over there → to the right. If you don't like this post, then you don't like America.

1) AC/DC/Rocking All the Way - These guys always make my summer soundtrack.

2) REO Speedwagon/Little Queenie - More good rock and roll, retro style.

3) The Little Mermaid/Happy Ending - And then that happened. Mood killer.

4) Little River Band/Take It Easy on Me - Now that's better.

5) Michael Jackson/Sunset Driver - Yeah, I aint ever heard this one either, but he does his "whoo" and "hehe" a lot.

6) Red Hot Chili Peppers/This Velvet Glove - Yep.

7) Yes/Heart of the Sunrise Def Leppard/Release Me - How this is on the Hysteria deluxe edition I'll never know. And I'm tired of live Yes songs.

8) Motley Crue/Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away) - Album cover winner

 

9) The Beatles/Dig a Pony - I will come right out here and say the Beatles did some pure crap at times.

 

10) REO Speedwagon/How the Story Goes - Another classic oldie from them. Unfortunately, it gets them banned for next week.

 

Well there we go. REO gets banned and I'm just plain tired of live Yes songs. The STCS for this week is Korn/Twist. Blame Tabitha for that one. I hope your holiday has been rockin'!

Friday and the Random 10 (05/24/13)

Ugh! Finally a off day after going back to work and all that blah blah blah. Great to see all my old coworkers though! And my off day falls on a Friday? How convenient! As usual the rules are over there to the right → so let's dig into my somewhat eclectic music collection and see what the gods of randomness reveals. Looking back at last week I see that Jimmy Buffet is ineligible. Maybe I should keep a running count? I dunno. I keep tweaking my own rules. Anyway, on with the show!
 
1) Van Halen/You're No Good - From the good ole David Lee Roth days
 
2) Jon Anderson/Far Away in Baagad - You know, sometimes I have no idea what the hell JA is singing about. This is one of them.
 
3) Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe/Fist of Fire (alternate version) - Ok, yeah this is from my #1 desert island CD. Yes, the one from this pathetic relationship story. Imagine my surprise years later when I find out there were alternate versions of some of the songs and even songs left off the album entirely (good ones too). I think the most telling thing about the whole situation was that there was going to be an ABWH II album that never materialized. It makes me feel like there was potential there for that relationship to continue, but forces stopped it from happening. Yeah, I read a lot into things...

4) The Little Mermaid/Fathoms Below - Er, ummm, yeah this was downloaded for my girls. Yeah, that's the ticket. Look away now. Nothing to see here.
 
5) The Beatles/While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Classic. Nuff said.
 
6) Joan Jett & the Blackhearts/Fake Friends - Never heard this song before, but I like it. You got nothing to lose, you don't lose when you lose fake friends. Nice. New one for this list too.

7) Korn/Killing - Blame Tabitha for this one.

8) Korn/Y'all Want a Single - And for this one too. At least the are banned from next week now.
 
9) The Mahavishnu Orchestra/Jazz - This is some of that late 60's, early 70's fusion stuff I was looking into. I tried them out because I noticed Jon Anderson always mentioned them as in influence in interviews. I would have sworn they have made the list before but I guess not.

10) Styx/The Grand Illusion - Just not that version. This is the re-recording from their Regeneration CD. So no DDY, just Lawrence Gowan singing his parts. Me no likey. Don't mess with the originals.
 
So a little bit of everything this week. A few newcomers, Korn gets banned, and you learn a little more about my obsession with ABWH. The STCS for this week is Lynyrd Skynyrd/What's Your Name. Not bad. No doubt who's playing us out this week:

I must say, this is my favorite post to write every week. I don't write it ahead of time either or fudge the results. I truly have no idea what will play when I start this. So here I am setting my media player on random and waiting to see what shows up. And away we go!

1) Korn/For No One - Well that was a heavy way to start the day. Not really my style. Just trying them out because of a friend.

2) The Moody Blues/Words You Say - Don't know this song. Very over the top with the orchestra.

3) The Buggles/Living in the Plastic Age - Video winner because a video actually exists of this song:

4) Steve Howe/Cruise Control - From Homebrew 3, which is the third (duh) collection of his at home demos that evolved into other songs or parts of other songs. I was really surprised at how much of Yes' music came from him. This piece eventually became New Languages on The Ladder album.

5) U2/The Fly - I do not really know much, or really cared about their music. This sounds cool though.

6) Yes/Harold Land - Now here's some classic stuff that I've already shared here.

7) Syd Barrett/Waving My Arms in the Air - I tried some of his stuff because of the whole Pink Floyd thing and from an episode of The X Files. IMHO, his music is complete crap and gets the Picard Award (brand new!)

8) ELO/Starlight - I love bands that have a certain sound and no matter what they play you know it's them.

9) Korn/Ball Tongue - I don't even know how to comment on this one. I'm just not a fan of the dark angry music. They might get the (so far unused) Cybermen Award before too long.

10) Phil Collins/In The Air Tonight - You know, the song where everyone (including Mike Tyson) knows the drum parts.

Well there we go for another week. I keep waiting for something new to show up, and for that matter, we haven't seen RW in quite awhile either! No album cover winner this week? Odd. The STCS for this week is Chicago/What Else Can I Say. Good, older stuff from them before the 80's happened.

Friday and the Random 10

Yes, it's that time again boys and girls (especially the ladies...) for another dance with the gods of randomness. So set that miscellaneous music device to random and let the chips fall where they may!

1) Styx/A.D. 1928 - The reprise of the Best of Times theme to close out the Paradise Theater album. Yeah, this one:

2) Starcastle/Forces - Basically, the American version (or attempt) of Yes. I do like their music though.

3) Korn/I'm Done - Well that was a mood changer.

4) Chicago/Cry for the Lost - From the Stone of Sisyphus album, which had an interesting history of being rejected by the record company for 15 years. The love song 80's really killed this band, but yall know my theories on that.

5) Genesis/Home by the Sea - They were awesome during the 80's/90's

6) Yes/Siberian Khatru - Live version from The Word is Live. Interesting collection of concert performances from them , but I prefer the studio stuff. And nobody seems to know what a "khatru" is.

7) Pink Floyd/Shine on You Crazy Diamond - You know, I never cared much for PF (maybe because I'm not a pot-head), but I have given them a try. I read up on them and this song dealing with the nutbag of Syd Barret. Crazy diamond indeed...

8) Britney Spears/Circus - Move along, nothing to see here. Let's pretend you never saw this one.

9) Def Leppard/Answer to the Master - Early stuff before they were huge. I didn't even recognize this one.

10) Yes/Starship Trooper - Another live version from somewhere. Doesn't sound like Jon is singing either. I need to delete some of this stuff.

Well that's it for another week and remember, groups should not hire new singers from tribute bands. Also, if you're a rock band, just because you have a hit with a love song doesn't mean every song from now until eternity has to be a love song (ahem, Chicago...and Journey...and too many others to list). Well once again it's Friday so you know what that means! Valentine's Day is finally over? No, not that. I'm gonna hit random on my entire music collection and list the first ten songs that pop up. I mean really, you should know how it works by now. If not, get with the program! Let's see what 1/2 price chocolate day has in store for me:

1) Foreigner/Night to Remember - actually I don't remember anything from last night. I don't even remember this song

2) Alabama/I Ain't Got No Business Doin' Business Today - Not my style. As the Cybermen say: Delete! Delete!.

3) Rush/Roll The Bones - finally a good song. It's a parallax you dig? Video winner because hey, a rapping skeleton.

4) Across the Universe soundtrack/Let It Be - great song from a good movie

5) Styx/Pieces of Eight - title track and album cover winner

6) Rush/Prime Mover - back when Rush did music I could actually listen to

7) Genesis/Second Home by the Sea - back when Genesis was tha bomb!

8) Asia/The Smile Has Left Your Eyes - cant let this album cover go unnoticed either

9) Shaw-Blades/For What It's Worth - Tommy Shaw of Styx and Jack Blades of Night Ranger were in Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent. Got that straight? Ok, well they did an album together of song that influenced them growing up with the clever title of Influences. It's a great album though.

10) AC/DC/Rock And Roll Aint Noise Pollution - no, no it's not

Well there ya go.That seems to be a good mix of 70's - 90's (with no RW again I might add!). The STCS for this week is Korn/Seen It All.

Groundhog Day and the Random 10

OK, I haven't done this in quite awhile and want to get back to it. I guess I should probably lay out some of my ground rules here. I open up media player on my computer (you can use iTunes or an mp3 player or whatever), put the music on random (I currently have 38.7 GB), and list the first 10 songs that pop up, no matter how embarrassing. Sometimes a theme will emerge which will be indicated in the title. Other times, eh...

And a few other notes... I like to include my own personal awards such as Album Cover Winner, Video Winner and Lyrics Winner when appropriate. There are also special categories such as the Spinal Tap Commemorative Song, or STCS (some people will get it) and the Recycle Bin Award which goes to songs that are so bad I just have to delete them from existence.

Also, as a running joke and because he released 1,837 albums during the 1980's, Rick Wakeman is guaranteed to show up at least once per list...

...and away we go!

1) Fleetwood Mac/Go Your Own Way - good way to start, everyone just about knows this song

2) REO Speedwagon/Keep Pushin' - classic oldie from the boys

3) Velvet Revolver/Dirty Little Thing - OK  this is one of those things I downloaded to try out so this is probably my first listen to it. It can stay.

4) REO Speedwagon/Start a New Life - wow, two songs from them already? This is an oldie, but not a classic

5) Van Halen/House of Pain - from the classic 1984, though not some of the better stuff from this album

6) Pink Floyd/The Grand Vizier's Garden Party - and then there's crap like this. I still think YES is better.

7) Genesis/Paperlate - love this song

8) YES/Silent Talking - just so you know, YES will always win the album cover challenge

9) Korn/Daddy - some people inspire me to try different music sometimes (this one's obviously you Tabitha). My first listen for this one.

10) Boston/Peace of Mind - freaking epic
