Friday and the Random 10 (Opening Day Edition)

Enough basketball already! I mean other than waiting for Kentucky to win it all like everyone thinks they will, and Alabama trying to find a new coach, I am all hooped out. But hold on, help is on the way! (cue The Little River Band) Baseball opening day is Sunday! Yeah, the Braves are going to suck, but at least they are playing a game outside. Then again, I am probably the only person that actually likes baseball anyway.

But before we fill out those lineup cards and sit down with some dogs and a beer, lets take a quick review of last week by following this link, or trying to figure out the artists from the cool picture below:

As always the rules and whatnot are up there ↑ at the top next to the Home tab.

The Wide World of Sports* (12/10/14)

*Well, only the ones I care about.

NCAA Football

The only thing that matters now is the playoff rankings. This is what they looked like before the conference championships:

1) Alabama
2) Oregon
3) TCU
4) Florida State

*******************************************

5) Ohio State
6) Baylor
7) Arizona
8) Michigan State

NCAA Football

It's starting to get down to the nitty gritty part of the season now so I am just going to start focusing on the top ten teams. This is the first year that the top four teams will meet in a playoff (committee rankings announced every Tuesday). Well, this is what the Top 10 looked like before Saturday:

1 Mississippi State (48) 9-0 1488
2 Florida State (12) 9-0 1446
3 Oregon 9-1 1334
4 Alabama 8-1 1326
5 TCU 8-1 1273
6 Baylor 8-1 1193
7 Arizona State 8-1 1142
8 Ohio State 8-1 1086
9 Auburn 7-2 981
10 Ole Miss 8-2 948

The Wide World of Sports* (10/07/14)

*Well, only the ones I care about.

MLB

I love me some baseball and October means one thing: playoffs! Go Braves! Oh they had a horrible year? Never mind. They did fire their GM though and their hitting coach resigned (thank God!).

American League: The Royals won their one game wildcard playoff against the A's to advance to take on the California Angels (you can change their name all you want, I will always call them this). This was not exactly Mike Trout's coming out party as the Royals swept the Angels in three games.

In the other match-up we have the Baltimore Orioles against the Detroit Tigers. Bullpen explosions hampered Detroit and they just never seemed to get things in gear with their great starting pitching. They went and got swept too y'all.

So now it's down to Baltimore vs. Kansas City with the winner going to the World Series.

National League: The Giants won their wildcard game against the Pirates. They now play the Nationals and as I write this they are up two games to one.

The big series is actually the Dodgers and the Cardinals. Both aces, Kershaw and Wainwright, were shelled. The Cards surprising lead this series 2-1 also.

NFL

Meh. I am a Falcons fan so that's all I really care about (and I don't even care that much). I do keep an eye on the teams from Florida though, but that has not been very pretty.

The Falcons can't win on the road and are currently 2-3, but in second place in the division. Jacksonville, Miami, and Tampa are a combined 3-11. Ouch. They need more Bama players.

NCAA Football

Well, this is what the Top 25 looked like before Saturday:

1 Florida State (27) 4-0 1416
2 Oregon (13) 4-0 1405
3 Alabama (13) 4-0 1387
4 Oklahoma (7) 4-0 1357
5 Auburn 4-0 1272
6 Texas A&M 5-0 1206
7 Baylor 4-0 1149
8 UCLA 4-0 975
9 Notre Dame 4-0 972
10 Michigan State 3-1 944
11 Ole Miss 4-0 906
12 Mississippi State 4-0 848
13 Georgia 3-1 788
14 Stanford 3-1 643
15 LSU 4-1 636
16 USC 3-1 560
17 Wisconsin 3-1 502
18 BYU 4-0 450
19 Nebraska 5-0 445
20 Ohio State 3-1 298
21 Oklahoma State 3-1 246
22 East Carolina 3-1 237
23 Kansas State 3-1 216
24 Missouri 4-1 145
25 TCU 3-0 109

Then a lot of upsets happened, including one I am not even going to talk about (Ole Miss? Are you freaking kidding me?). Anyway, the new Top 25 now looks like this:

1 Florida State
2 Auburn (23) 5-0 1459
3 Mississippi State (2) 5-0 1320
3 Ole Miss 5-0 1320
5 Baylor 5-0 1258
6 Notre Dame 5-0 1186
7 Alabama 4-1 1060
8 Michigan State 4-1 981
9 TCU 4-0 979
10 Arizona 5-0 951
11 Oklahoma 4-1 904
12 Oregon 4-1 888
13 Georgia 4-1 854
14 Texas A&M 5-1 731
15 Ohio State 4-1 534
16 Oklahoma State 4-1 527
17 Kansas State 4-1 486
18 UCLA 4-1 460
19 East Carolina 4-1 344
20 Arizona State 4-1 325
21 Nebraska 5-1 283
22 Georgia Tech 5-0 235
23 Missouri 4-1 212
24 Utah 4-1 206
25 Stanford 3-2 143

There's still a lot of season left to make it into those four top spots for the NCAA's first ever playoff at the end of the year. To paraphrase Dory, "just keep winning, just keep winning..."

Auburn is an illusion y'all. Don't buy it.

Roll Tide anyway.

7) Friday and the Random 10 (Refurbishment Edition) - My most recent post of weekly randomness.

6) Friday and the Random 10 (Night of Joy Edition) - First one from this month.

5) My Braves had a no hitter thrown against them. I didn't like it.

4) This Random 10 from 9/19/14 taught us the phrase "warehouse of suck"

3) Hump Day, Poll Day (9/3/14) - True Blood? Whut?

2) My list of top 10 favorite Yes album covers from 2/05/12 is still going strong after all this time.

1) Friday and the Random 10 (Disney Lingo Edition) - I have found that if I include Disney in any kind of way it boosts my blog views. So from now on I am just going to end each post with #Disney. Yeah, I'm on my way to being an internet sensation.

Seriously though, I appreciate everyone who reads my stuff and offers me suggestions and ideas for future posts and projects. Big hugs!

How I Feel About the Braves

Except the Indians had one more hit than the Braves did today. Do I need to do the math for you?

Weekend Update (06/02/13)

I have been working quite a lot and add in the fact that I've been sick has changed my ability to keep up with the shows I like (and to blog about them). As I looked for newer episodes I basically found there weren't any. Everything is on hiatus or between seasons. I did watch a few movies though.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Dee had her baby, and it belonged to the tranny. Of course it did.

Game of Thrones - The imp married the 14 year old girl. There were some boobs and butts. And the fat boy apparently found a magic knife.

Movies - Hansel and Gretel - I thought this movie was pretty cool. I just didn't know witches had wicked ninja skills. And that's how trolls can be bitchin'.

Jack the Giant Slayer - You know, since I was apparently watching all movies involving fairy tales. Maybe it was the fever, but I liked this movie too. The giants were awesome and the climax of where the magic crown ended up was neat.

Extinction - This was a free rental from X-Box. It was still overpriced. This movie sucked, rambled on in several nonsensical ways, and ended with no conclusion. It was another one of those virus/walking dead type of movies, but had no plot, no direction, and no point. It made my fever feel worse...

Sports

Braves - Not to bore you with two weeks worth of stats, but since the last update the Braves have gone 9-4 to improve their record to 34-22 overall. They are in first place with the biggest lead of the year at 6.5 games over the Washington Nationals.

Bama Baseball - Played well enough in the SEC tournament to get a #2 seed in the Tallahassee Regional. Unfortunately lost their first game to #3 seed Troy 5-2 to put them in the losers bracket. In the elimination game they beat Savannah State, only to advance and lose to Troy again by blowing a 3 run lead in the ninth. Ouch. Season over.

P.S. And do not forget to recommend this blog continues.

Weekend Update (05/20/13)

Audio/Video/Telly

Doctor Who - The Name of the Doctor. Okay, I am not going to throw any spoilers out just yet since it was the season finale. We learn the deal with Clara and I buy it. It works for me. We never learn the Doctor's name though and I thought that was kind of cheating. The end was extremely cryptic though. And I don't think we have seen the end of River Song.

How I Met Your Mother Look at the picture. Nuff said.

New Girl - What do you get when you introduce a live badger into an Indian wedding? Yeah. And now Schmidt must choose between his old girlfriend and CeCe.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Lethal Weapon 5. Exactly.

Game of Thrones - I feel like things are just dragging along. Something big needs to happen soon or they are going to lose me.

Movies - Star Trek Into Darkness. So this was the next summer blockbuster I have seen (the other is Iron Man 3). It was full of excitement in many parts and then I don't know what happened. I think they rehashed way too much from Wrath of Kahn and even though there were some twists, I felt like I had seen this movie before, just with different actors. It will make tons of money for sure (and Benedict Cumberbatch was awesome), but beyond that I wasn't really blown away.

Sports

Braves - They lost 2 out of 3 to the Diamondbacks, but rebounded by sweeping the Dodgers. Their record is now 25-18, which still has them in first place.

P.S. And do not forget to recommend this blog continues.

Weekend Update (05/12/13)

Audio/Video/Telly

Doctor Who - Nightmare in Silver. Oh boy, more Cybermen! Yeah, that was sarcasm. You know, I'm tired of them dragging up the same old characters over and over. This season has just been a dud to me so far. Next week looks promising though.

Community - Alternate timeline evil Jeff (and sexy Annie) cross over to stop good Jeff from graduating and leaving Greendale. Yes, paintball guns were involved...

How I Met Your Mother Mostly a Robin story looking for the locket she buried in Central Park as a young "boy". The rest is Barney playing laser tag with her dad. Ominous ending though.

New Girl - The day after. Jess and Nick waking up together and having to play it off because her dad shows up. CeCe is freaking out because she fell asleep on her henna hand tattoo and has it all over her face. Schmidt gets it on with her old girlfriend (who I like). And oh, it was Winston's birthday.

Big Bang Theory - Viva Las Dungeons and Dragons! The girls' Vegas trip is cancelled and they end up crashing the guys' D&D night. They end up combining both. Awesome impressions by Howard too.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Made my way into Season 5. This show is so "Mac". Day Man, fighter of the Night Man...

Game of Thrones - Right off the bat, I cannot tell you what the last episode was about. Let me go check again...

Oh yeah. Lots of finagling about who is going where or taking over this or that. That one dude is getting the crap tortured out of him by the guy from The Misfits. And that dude and the hot redhead chick climbed up the ice wall. I think they are starting to lose me.

Movies - At one point I felt tired of watching 20 minute episodes of stuff, so I went digging through my DVD's. The first I settled on was National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Civil War intrigue by Nicholas Cage and Ed Harris which led to the City of Gold. It was funnier but, not quite as good as the first one. And what was on page 47 on the Presidential book??? I was hoping there would be another movie to explain that. Ugh.

The next movie (since I have been playing non-stop Call of Duty) was Enemy at the Gates. This was about Russian sniper Vassili Zaitsev during the German invasion of Stalingrad. He was so badass that they had to send in the head Nazi sniper in to try and kill him. And wow, hey, there's Ed Harris again! Great movie. It's on my bucket list to go to the Museum of Stalingrad to see his actual rifle on display.

Sports

Braves - Started the week by taking 2 out of 3 from the Reds. Unfortunately they got treated rudely by the Giants losing 3 out of 4. Their record stands at 21-16, which is still good enough for first place, but not for long if they keep playing like that.

P.S. And do not forget to recommend this blog continues.

Weekend Update

Audio/Video/Telly

Doctor Who - The Crimson Horror. It seems the Doctor is taking Clara places to find out what the deal is with her. Back to Victorian England and Jenny, Madame Vastra and Strax join in this episode. Now they want to know what the deal is with this girl that is and isn't Clara at the same time. No answers were revealed though. The end part with the photos was very cool though. That's all I'm saying.

Community - Abed had worked out everyone's "origin story" so he could do a "prequel" episode about how they all ended up at Greendale. Lots of cool connecting the dots.

New Girl - The gang has a contest over who has the worst "deflowering" story. Funny stuff and so many one liners I might have to go back and watch it again. Oh and Jess and Nick finally do it.

Big Bang Theory - Sheldon almost kills one of his childhood idols. Howard and Bernadette babysit Raj's dog. That man is becoming what I warned you about in my post about online dating.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - I had watched some of this before but I got recently inspired to dive back into it. I love because it's so non-PC that it's "Mac". Yeah I'm trying to start a catchphrase there. So far it's included racial stereotypes, gay men, welfare, crack, terrorists, the handicapped, and Nazi's. And that's only the first six episodes. Yeah.

Game of Thrones - Several episodes in now and the only interesting thing going on is Khaleesi and her dragon army. I like the redhead chick north of the wall though. I was slightly creeped out by the soldier having his nipple cut off.

Movies - Nothing serious this week, just Iron Man 3. Lots of action. That man has a lot of iron man suits at his disposal. Pepper kicks ass, but I felt the movie was dragged down by the kid Tony befriends. Lots of great zingers from Robert Downey Jr. as expected. Oh, and he doesn't have the temperament to be that kind of doctor. LOL.

Sports

Braves - Started the week by winning the first two games against the Nationals, only to end up with a split by losing the next two. On next to play the Mets. Lost on Friday followed by a rain out on Saturday. Beat the crap out of them Sunday in which Tim Hudson, from my home town of Phenix City, AL, won game #201 in his career. Their record is now 18-12, still good enough for first place.

P.S. And do not forget to recommend this blog continues.

Weekend Update

Audio/Video/Telly

Doctor Who - Journey to the Center of the Tardis. Basically a Clara episode where we don't learn much about her, but she does come across some interesting things while she is being chased through the interior of the Tardis. The pool, the library, that telescope thingy that killed the werewolf in that one episode. She also finds a book called "The History of the Time War" and learns the Doctor's name, only to have it erased later. Grrr.

Community - Troy and Abed do the whole swapping bodies bit like in Freaky Friday. It has its moments.

How I Met Your Mother - Damn I wish Lilly would take the job in Italy and be gone forever.

Movies - Of all the Pixar movies, The Incredibles is my favorite. Reminds me of happier times when things were all about family. My oldest daughter is so Violet, and my youngest is very much Dash (for a girl). Unfortunately there is no Elastigirl in my life anymore. As awesome as this movie is, it hurts to watch it sometimes.

Books - Finally got Homeland, and promptly finished it in one day. Yeah, I read like that. It was a continuation of the book Little Brother. Within the first 50 pages there were references to The Pirate Bay, torrents, X-box and Doctor Who. And yeah, Will Wheaton makes a character appearance. Unfortunately, the book left me with a feeling of non-closure. I wanted the evil bitch to pay, but she got off the hook again. Double Grrr.

Sports

Braves - Went to Colorado and took two out of three (after having a game cancelled because of snow), and then got swept in Detroit. They have played just two home games in the last three weeks. Scheduling sucks. Finished the week with a record of 15-9, which is still good for first place.

NFL Draft - The draft finally happened and all I was concerned about was where my Bama boys were going and who the Falcons would pick. Well the Falcons didn't "wow" me, but Alabama made some noise in the first round with three straight picks (9-11) with CB Dee Milliner going to the Jets, OL Chance Warmack going to Tennessee and then OL DJ Fluker picked up by San Diego. The rest of the draft went like:
  • RB Eddie Lacy, Green Bay Packers
  • LB Nico Johnson to Kansas City Chiefs
  • OL Barrett Jones to St Louis Rams
  • DL Jessie Williams to Seattle Seahawks
  • DL Quinton Dial to San Francisco 49ers
  • TE Michael Williams to Detroit Lions
  • DB Robert Lester to Carolina Panthers
  • DL Damion Square to Philadelphia Eagles
  • OL Carson Tinker to Jacksonville Jaguars
Considering just a few years ago, Bama had not one single player drafted at all, Nick Saban is worth every damn penny he is paid (maybe more).

Weekend Update

Audio/Video/Telly

Doctor Who - Hide. Finally an episode worth a damn. Turns out the whole ghost hunting thing was just so the Doctor could talk to the psychic lady and ask her about Clara, who said she was a normal girl. She earlier warned Clara about the Doctor saying he has ice in his heart. And what was that circle he drew on the ground? Those statues in that room kind of freaked me out too.

Community - Christmas episode? Yep. The air date for these episodes were pushed back several months. Cool how at the end they went with that whole alternate timeline thing again. Annie is still so yummy.

How I Met Your Mother - Finally a new one from them. Lilly and Marshall slightly bore me. They've beaten that whole Lilly is the horny band geek from American Pie for way too long. We never got to see the "redonkulous" body of the wedding planner. Maybe soon!

Movies - So if you know anything about me, you know I have a lot of free time right now so I find myself watching old movies for inspiration or whenever one pops in my head. One of these was The Mist. Not usually my type of movie but I saw an article where it was called the predecessor to The Walking Dead. I'm like whut? So I watch it and one of the main character is Andrea. And oh look there's Dale. Holy crap that's Carol (did she always have short dikey hair?)! Funny that all of them were in the movie and ended up in a series together years later. And I never connected Andrea with Marita Covarrubias from the X-Files! Wow, the things you learn...

Music - I added some music from Peter Schilling and The Cars, and a ton of 80's singles from some compilation albums. Yeah, I was basically trying to re-live my high school days.

Books - Finished Little Brother by Cory Doctorow in one day. Looking forward to the next book Homeland, if it will ever show up in the mail.

Sports

Braves - The Braves split a two games series with the Royals in which their 10 game winning streak was snapped. Then they went to Pittsburgh and apparently didn't like the cooler weather there. They lost all three games. Their record is now 13-5, still good for first place in the NL East.

P.S. And do not forget to recommend this blog continues.

Weekend Update

Audio/Video/Telly

Doctor Who - Cold War. So yeah it's another character (ice warriors) from the distant past kind of episode. It was okay but I want to know what the deal is with Clara. It's like they've forgotten to even tell that story. And what happened to the Silence? I guess I had gotten used to the whole large story arcs as a season unfolds but this just seems a lot of stand alone episodes that don't really move the story along in any kind of way. I've been very underwhelmed so far.

Community - Puppets. We got a puppets episode. Nuff Said. It's always something fun and different. Bravo.

Ben and Kate - Started watching this due to a recommendation. Ben is kind of annoying in a stupid way, but Kate is the real treasure here as she tries dating and starting her life all over after having a baby at a very young age. Not that that reminds me of anyone.

New Girl - CeCe is freaking out over her soon to be (Indian!) wedding, because she has never seen her fiancĂ©es  penis. So it's up to Nick and Winston to get a pic of it for her. Yeah. It goes about how you would expect.

Movies - I was reading about some movies in production and came across the best news of all: they are making Isaac Asimov's Foundation books into a movie. This reminded me of another movie which was closely related so I went back and watched The Adjustment Bureau. Awesome stuff.

Music - I added some Snow Patrol after a conversation with a friend.

Books - I am re-reading (again) Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. Great book about a high school kid that hacks a lot of ordinary items in his school/life that gets him in trouble once he disagrees with the "establishment" over recognition software that tracks everyone like Stalin. Looking forward to the next book Homeland, if I can ever get the book club web page to work.

Sports

Braves - The Braves started off the week by sweeping the Marlins in three games. The big test was then going to Washington and playing the team everyone thinks will win it all this year. The Braves had something to say about that as they swept them also 6-4. 3-1, and then a 9-0 clobbering. They currently have the best record in baseball at 11-1. Go Braves!
