This Day in Music History (10/19): Styx/Cornerstone

On this day in 1979, Styx released its ninth studio album Cornerstone. This was Styx's follow-up to their second consecutive Top 10 selling Triple Platinum album in a row, 1978's Pieces of Eight.



Like the four previous Styx albums, the band produced the album themselves once again. However, the band started using a new recording studio Pumpkin Studios in Oak Lawn, Illinois. Plus, the album was the first where the band shied away from the art-rock/prog-rock influences that dominated their first eight studio albums and was the band's first move towards a more pop/rock direction (band member Dennis DeYoung stated in a 2009 interview that the change in direction came from reading bad reviews the group got in the rock press while on their first tour of England).

Regardless, the move towards "Barry Manilow's territory" set Tommy and JY on one side with DDY on the other.

1) Lights - Tommy gets the opening track this time and it's basically another great TS song. It was apparently released as the second single from the album, but I could not find any charting information so apparently it did not fare too well. Surprising. I know it has appeared on several greatest hits compilations.

2) Why Me - The third single from the album, sung by DDY, that reached #26 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. I guess the main thing you can say about the "sound" of the album so far was that Dennis predominantly used a Fender Rhodes electric piano. I think it gave whole thing a more mature sound. Also, as evidenced on this track, they used real strings and a horn section.

3) Babe - The song was written by DDY as a birthday present for his wife Suzanne (tell me if you've heard that one before). The finished track was recorded as a demo with just DeYoung and Styx members John and Chuck Panozzo playing on the track, with DeYoung singing all of the harmonies himself.

The song was not originally intended to be a Styx track, but JY and Tommy convinced him to put the song on Cornerstone (be careful what you ask for guys). As a result, the demo was placed on the album with Shaw overdubbing a guitar solo in the song's middle section. The track became a major hit, reaching #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song was Styx's first, and only, U.S. #1 single.

Taken out of context, it's a great song but was a harbinger of bad things and feelings to come. Everything doesn't have to be a love song about your wife Dennis. Write about something else.

4) Never Say Never - Another nice little Tommy Shaw song, with some French lyrics that got me thinking. This album does remind me a lot of Crystal Ball in its "softness". And it repeats the chorus way too often for me.

5) Boat on the River - The fourth single released from the album features Tommy Shaw on lead vocals and mandolin, with Dennis DeYoung accompanying on accordion. In the video for the song, Chuck Panozzo, John Panozzo, and James Young play bowed double bass, tambourine/bass drum and acoustic guitar respectively. It's basically Styx "unplugged". Funny thing is that is fared poorly in the U.S. not charting at all, but became a Top 5 hit in several German speaking countries (and reached #1 on the Swiss charts...wait, whut?)

Side one of Cornerstone contained four of the five singles released (two each by Tommy and Dennis), but only DDY's charted ("Babe" #1 and "Why Me" #26). That leaves one more for Side Two, and you know what else is found there? Chaos. Utter chaos.


Side Two



The first side contained the band's first (and only) U.S. #1 single in "Babe". However, there was becoming a major rift in the band that wanted to continue its rocking ways as opposed to entering "Barry Manilow's territory". This became evident as the follow up singles to "Babe" were released.

6) Borrowed Time - One of the most rocking songs on the album (like that's hard on this one) sung by Tommy Shaw Dennis DeYoung. Wait, DDY? This was the song that was released as opposed to another ballad. I have listened to this song over and over recently in preparation for this post and it just comes off as clinical and well, "sterile" sounding. The intro is great, but everything else just seems forced to me. Like they had almost forgotten how to rock. The song only reached a disappointing #63 on the singles charts. The band opened their concerts with this song (see video), on their 1979-1980 "Grand Decathlon Tour" in support of the album.

7) First Time - This song is so sugary sweet it almost gives me diabetes when I listen to it. Yeah, it's that bad. And this is the song they wanted to release as the second single! Radio stations were playing it and got such a response that A&M wanted it out until Tommy Shaw complained and drew a line in the sand. If they release that as the next single then he threatened to leave the band. He said in the Behind the Music Documentary that "We just can't do that. That can't be who we become. The band was big enough already. We didn't have to stretch out into Barry Manilow's territory." The following band meetings led to Dennis being fired from the band for eight weeks, but because they couldn't come up with a replacement they eventually wanted him back.

8) Eddie - This one is pretty straightforward. The only song by JY on the album is a rocker about Edward Kennedy, pleading with him not to make a run for the U.S. presidency.

9) Love in the Midnight - The album ends with this nice song by Tommy (does he do any other kind?).

Despite all the internal drama it created, Cornerstone became Styx's first US Top 5 album peaking at #2 on the Billboard album chart and it went Triple Platinum (3 million copies sold in the US).


The album that I have unfolds in the middle of the back cover with lyrics on either side like on the picture above. The album itself has a protective cover that looks like this:



The front cover, along with image on the back makes it look like you're buying something "mystical", when in truth there is nothing special about this album at all. It's almost like Crystal Ball 2.0. It sounds nice but there isn't a lot of substance.
