Survivor Season 35, Week 8 Recap

This season of Survivor is called Heroes vs Healers vs Hustlers. Eighteen players (11 remaining) were separated into three tribes according their work and life experience categories. Last week's recap can be found here.

Now, first of all, let me say that I am in no way an expert in any kind of way about this show. Actually I am only a few seasons in, but I'm starting to get the hang of it. This blog post is my way of helping me keep all things sorted out. So take it easy on me if I make mistakes.

Solewa

Back at camp there were some stunned faces. Ben and Lauren's plan went off like perfection, leaving even Joe impressed with the blindside target. Cole was like "wow, thats what it feels like to be lied to by everyone". Welcome to the game. Ryan looked like someone had shot his dog. Guess he realized he is not pulling the strings anymore.

During camp maintenance, Lauren was doing some hammering and reached right in and found that advantage that Cole had whiffed on. This was a new advantage that allows her to not vote in tribal and save that vote for a future tribal. She is supposed to place the advantage in the voting urn and keep the blank voting parchment with her without anyone seeing. If it plays out right, no one will even know all the votes weren't cast. However, if the vote ends in a tie...

Reward Challenge

I like these challenges that send certain groups of players away from the rest of the group. So many dynamics end up being discussed. This one is for a spaghetti dinner at a private island. It is an obstacle course where at the end sandbags are sling-shotted to knock over targets.

The red team was Ben, Mike, Lauren, Ashley and Desi. The blue team is Ryan, Chrissy, JP, Cole and Devon. Joe pulled the white rock which earns him the reward without having to play at all. Jerk.

The red team kept firing until they hit the target. Blue fired once and then went to the next person.

Ben and Mike hit - Red 2, Blue 0
JP hits - Red 2, Blue 1
Lauren hits - Red 3, Blue 1
Devon, JP and Devon again hit - Blue 4, Red 3
Ashley takes a long time to hit - Blue 4, Red 4
JP hits and wins it - Blue 5, Red 4

Afterwards there were several twists. First of all, they would be eating "family style" from just one pot, no individual servings. Second, they would be eating alone, so no one would know how much you ate and left for the remaining people. And Joe, who didn't play at all, gets to decide the order in which everyone eats. Cool.

Joe let Devon got first because of his birthday. He went in and shoveled down a good amount but didn't realize he had uncovered part of a clue under the dish. JP was next and didn't see it but Cole did. He didn't know who else had seen it, but it was the location of an idol. He then rewrapped the plate with some cloth to hide the message. Chrissy was next and knew from Survivor history that there is usually a clue or advantage so she started looking right away. She found it (#STFU) but thought she was first. Ryan was next and started looking right away as well. He found it and just totally threw the plate away so Joe had no chance of seeing it.

Now immediately back at camp, Cole goes to pee and Ryan sees his chance. He digs it up real quick and hides it in his "little pink shirts". Chrissy heads out there and Ryan says he has it and for her to cover up the hole. This is when Cole comes back and sees her there. All Hell breaks loose. He goes diving in knocking her out of the way. People are screaming and jumping onto the pile. And after all is said and done, they call Cole out for being a jerk AND think he has got the idol!

Individual Immunity Challenge

This challenge was to stand on a narrow beam while balancing a statue at the end of a pole, moving farther away at certain intervals.

Mike falls first, followed by Joe, Devon, Lauren, and Ryan. After moving back one step Ashley goes down, followed by Chrissy, Ben, and Desi.

JP drops and is outlasted by Cole to win immunity.

Tribal Council

Everyone is still focused on getting out the Healers. They decided to split votes between Joe and Desi (they still think Cole has an idol). The Healers know they are being targeted and know they don't have numbers so if they can sway one person to vote with them they can break any possible tie.

Lauren goes to Ben and tells him about her advantage and how a split vote wouldn't work and would probably put him in danger because of being a Healer target. Ben now thinks he needs to sway a Healer to vote with them and talks to Mike, who now sees a chance to improve his standing.

At tribal, Ben and Lauren received one vote, Lauren pulled off her switcheroo, leaving Desi and Joe tied with four votes apiece. On the revote, Desi got five more votes which was enough to send her home over Joe.

So that leaves us with (total tribal votes received in parentheses):

Solewa: Ashley (1), Joe (6), Devon, JP (1), Chrissy (7), Ryan*, Lauren** (2), Ben (1), Mike*, Cole

Voted out (in order): Katrina, Simone, Patrick, Alan, Roarke, Ali, Jessica

On the jury: Desi

*Ryan has a Hidden Immunity Idol from Week 8. Mike has one from Week 5. Joe found one in Week 2 and played it in Week 4. He found another in Week 6 and played it Week 7.

**Lauren found a Secret Advantage in Week 8 that allowed her to not vote that week, and secretly save that vote for a future Tribal, which she did. She now has two votes to play at her discretion.
