Survivor Season 38 Edge of Extinction Week 1 Recap

For Survivor's 37th season, 18 castaways will be sorted into two groups as usual. However, this season introduces a new twist, wherein contestants who are voted off have an option to take a boat to an area known as the "Extinction Island", rather than leave the game permanently.

Extinction Island is a desolate, abandoned beach with even fewer amenities than the main island: contestants on the Extinction Island may either wait for an opportunity to re-join the main game, or may choose to leave the game at any point. The remaining contestants will initially be unaware of this twist.

Now, first of all, let me say that I am in no way an expert in any kind of way about this show. Actually I am only a few seasons in, but I'm starting to get the hang of it. This blog post is my way of helping me keep all things sorted out. So take it easy on me if I make mistakes.

Manu

The tribe is: Dan, Reem, Rick, Wendy, Lauren, Keith, Chris, w/returning players Wentworth and David.

Out of this group Lauren looks like a real player. Reem is the "mommy" of the group. Wendy, who has mild Tourette's is a bundle of energy which makes her more adorable. Keith is very likable too, but he almost drowned getting off the ship and got swim lessons from Wendy/Reem. Apparently this set some off as a small sub-group splitting off when they were just trying to help the boy.

Kama

This tribe is : Victoria, Ron, Julia, Eric, Aurora, Julie, Gavin, w/returning players Joe and Aubry.

With the chaotic two minutes everyone had to get supplies off the boat and throw them into the water, someone always seems to find an advantage. That person was Ron. After following the clue to where it was buried, he dug up an "advantage menu". He gets the option to steal a reward, use an extra vote, or give himself immunity. However it must be used by the third tribal.

Eric and Gavin talked about riding behind Joe as long as possible, but Aubry was the first one that they wanted to go.

Immunity Challenge

It was basically a obstacle course from Hell with a push-block puzzle at the end. Kama seemed to ride behind Joe doing a lot of the single stuff like climbing and getting keys, etc, which is actually a pretty smart move. Manu floundered a bit, but hung in there (even with Wentworth whacking her head). It was pretty even as usual until the puzzle which is usually the great equalizer.

Kama was pushing the blocks around and got stuck, but then realized what to do next and got the target piece out before Manu.

Tribal Council

Always beware of anything that might make you a target, especially at the beginning. Reem's name was the easiest to throw out there (and yeah it probably was age-ism) even if not totally fair. But a majority will find a reason and stick with it as long as it's not them. Wentworth got 1 vote as did Lauren. Wendy got three votes, and Reem the other four to be voted out.

So that leaves us with (total votes received in parentheses):

Manu: Dan, Rick, Wendy (3), Lauren (1), Keith, Chris, Wentworth (1) and David

Kama: Victoria, Ron*, Julia, Eric, Aurora, Julie, Gavin, Joe and Aubry

Voted out (in order): Reem (EI)

EXTINCTION ISLAND

But wait...

However, and this is what we were all waiting to see, on the way out Reem was presented with two choices, leave the game and be done....or take the torch and get on the boat for a second chance. She took the torch and ended up on the island alone. At night. With no supplies. In the Rain.

Which brings up a lot of questions. What happens when the next person is voted out? Will they have to compete to get off Extinction Island? Will they all come back together as a new tribe to compete? Are there idols and advantages on the island?

Interesting twist if done right.
