Survivor Fiji: Millennials vs Gen-X Week 1 Recap

This season of Survivor is called Millennials versus Gen-X. Twenty players are separated into two tribes according the generation they were born into.

Now, first of all, let me say that I am in no way an expert in any kind of way about this show. Actually I am only a few seasons in, but I'm starting to get the hang of it. This blog post is my way of helping me keep all things sorted out. So take it easy on me if I make mistakes.

Intro

I found it interesting that not even the contestants knew how they were going to be split up. Probst had their buffs sorted out by name already so they picked theirs and learned the truth. Basically it turned into cocky versus confident at that point.

Probst then gave them two minutes to grab all the supplies they could, but at some tables they would have to make a choice for one item over another. The Millennials seemed to choose many short term items, while the older Gen-X peeps thought long term about their selections (like fishing gear over chickens).

In all the chaos an envelope was tossed to the side, but Gen-X Jessica immediately saw its importance and snagged it up and hid it away.

The Millennials tribe is called Vanua. This group consists of Adam, Hannah, Figgy, Jay, Mari, Michaela, Michelle, Taylor, Will and Zeke. Yeah, these guys are going to make you sick and you're going to love watching them fail. Will is the youngest in the whole game and is still in high school! That's a first.

Jay, and Taylor immediately started a bromance, which eventually included Figgy. They called themselves the "Triforce". Makes you wanna puke right? I did in my mouth a little. Ugh.

Hannah, who I'm now calling "nerdsexy" felt left out and others agreed said it was feeling more like "Freaks and Geeks" instead of one cohesive group.

The Gen-X tribe is called Takali. Its members include Bret, Chris, Cece, David, Jessica, Ken, Lucy, Paul, Rachel, and Sunday. Yeah, Sunday.

All these guys were serious and got right to work on their camp and shelter. Rachel (ahem, best boobs so far) was a little over eager at times, but this failed in comparison to David's "idol paranoia". At first he thought someone twenty feet from him had picked something up and wanted the two guys with him to go confront the guy immediately. Jeez, calm down dude! Later on while camp was being built he was seen by everyone digging and looking for an idol. Way to put a bullseye on your back dummy.

Oh, and that envelope Jessica picked up earlier? It was something new called a #LegacyAdvantage. It is an advantage to the game on Day 36! If she is voted out before then she can will it to another player. Cool.

The Weather

So this time of year in Fiji the weather is really bad. Like hurricane season bad. Each tribe was sent tree mail that included a tarp to help out. This was very welcome to Vanua who had wasted most of the day partying on the beach and then building a crappy shelter which kept none of the rain out (when it wasn't collapsing). Takali did a little better obviously, but still had a rough night.

The weather forecast got so grim that Probst had to show up and evac both tribes to a safe location. Another first! #Cyclone

Immunity Challenge

Once things got going again on Day 3, it was time for the first challenge for immunity! This challenge involved strategery from the start. Everyone had to crawl under an obstacle and then untie a hatchet, one for each person. As they approached obstacles #2 and #3, they had the option to use their hatchets to create a shortcut. However, each shortcut adds ten (!) pieces to the puzzle at the end.

Takali was the first through obstacle #1, and immediately used the shortcuts on the next two. Vanua was way behind because they did not use the shortcut on #2, but did on #3.

Takali was first to start on their 70 piece puzzle, while Vanua only had to work with 60 pieces. Rachel and David struggled badly for Takali, and got replaced, but not after Vanua finished and won immunity. Takali goes to tribal.

Tribal Council

So the obvious two here were Rachel and David. Rachel was a target because she screwed up the puzzle in the immunity challenge, and David was a target for many, many reasons. He gave what he called a "speech" on the beach, but it was him just begging like a pussy not to be sent home and telling him he will be their bitch and will write down any name they say. Wow. Others were worried that he had actually found an idol and were hesitant to put his name down. That's probably what saved him.

Dave got one vote, as did Sunday (?). Cece got three votes, but the other five went to Rachel.

So that leaves us with (total tribal votes received in parentheses):

Takali: Bret, Chris, Cece (3), David (1), Jessica*, Ken, Lucy, Paul, and Sunday (1).

Vanua: Adam, Hannah, Figgy, Jay, Mari, Michaela, Michelle, Taylor, Will and Zeke.

Voted out (in order): Rachel
