This Day in Music History: Journey, King Crimson, Van Halen and ZZ Top (03/23)

On this day, there was certainly a plethora of classic albums released by several bands:

So let's start chronologically shall we?

King Crimson/Larks' Tongues in Aspic (1973) - This is their 5th studio album and the debut of King Crimson's third incarnation, featuring original member and guitarist Robert Fripp and new members John Wetton (vocals, bass guitar), David Cross (violin, Mellotron), Jamie Muir (percussion), and Bill Bruford (who had just left Yes, on drums). It is also a key album in the band's evolution, drawing on Eastern European classical music and European free improvisation as central influences. The album peaked at #20 on the UK charts and at #61 in the U.S.

Van Halen/Van Halen II (1979) - This is obviously the second studio album by American hard rock band Van Halen. It peaked at #6 on the Billboard charts and spawned the singles "Dance the Night Away"(#15) and "Beautiful Girls" (#84). To date, it has sold over five million copies in the United States.

Journey/Departure (1980) - This is the 6th studio album and the band's highest charting album to date, giving Journey their first appearance in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 album charts, peaking at #8. The album includes three singles: "Any Way You Want It" (#23), "Walks Like a Lady" (#32), and "Good Morning Girl/Stay Awhile" (#56).

ZZ Top/Eliminator (1983) - The band's 8th album, often considered ZZ Top's most popular release, peaked at the top of the charts in many countries. "Gimme All Your Lovin'"(#2), "Got Me Under Pressure"(#18), "Sharp Dressed Man"(#8), "TV Dinners"(#38) and "Legs"(#3) were released as singles. A Diamond certified album, Eliminator is ZZ Top's most successful release with sales of over 10 million copies in the United States.

Eliminator used music videos as successful promotional tools — the videos for "Gimme All Your Lovin'", "Sharp Dressed Man" and "Legs" all received regular rotation on MTV. A customized 1930s Ford coupe, depicted on the album cover, could be seen in the videos.
