The Monument of States (But Mostly America)

So awhile back, me and my roomie Kerra were searching through websites trying to find odd or unique "tourist" attractions that we could go to for little or no money. Kind of like exploring the local landscape away from the amusement parks in the area. Well we found one basically in our back yard. Not 15 minutes away, in downtown Kissimmee of all places, is what's called the Monument of States.

So we take off in the car and follow Google maps to the lakefront recreational area of Lake Toho ($5 to anyone who can pronounce the full name of this lake) and begin looking around for this monument. We find out it's basically hard to miss this abomination:

So there it was in all its "glory". And this sucker was tall too. Apparently this tower is a collection of rock and mineral samples from various states. Some are there more than once. I'm sure a state or two might be missing. We didn't check too closely, though some did stand out.

Supposedly, there was a cannonball on there somewhere but we never found it. We did find the meteorites though (in the pale green):

Also, shout outs to Alabama and Oregon:

For some strange reason other countries were also included. Makes the title a little misleading, but we also found sections from Belgium, England, Africa, the Sahara Desert (what?), Greece and Italy. Yeah.

All in all a very interesting artifact. From all the dates on the plaques and engravings it looks like it was built around 1941. Strange, but cool all the same.
